Fly a controller

The WNC Pilot Association sponsors a "Fly A Controller" [FAC] Program, wherein members volunteer their services to let the Asheville Controllers experience flight in our environs.

The preferred route begins at Landmark Aviation at Asheville Regional Airport (AVL), with flight to Greenville-Spartanburg [Greer, GSP], a touch-and-go there, to acquaint the Controller with leaving and re-entering another Class C airspace's communications and procedures. From GSP, flight back to Asheville via Transylvania Community Airport [3NR3], with a full stop landing, to familiarize the Controller with the topography and geography of that airport.

The first FAC flight was 20 Feb 2010. Five Controllers: (Bill Lincoln., Jamie Szczecinski, James Moody, Mike Minlschmidt and Martin (Frank) Muir)  flew with our pilots (Rex Dowtin, Robert Poole, Don Short, Cindy Carter., Rick Ondrovic, and Ed Benson). One of the Controller's main take-home lessons was the difficulty pilots have in locating air traffic when alerted to same by ATC.
There are four or five more Controllers that wish to make the flight when our schedules permit.

AOPA has been contacted about our FAC program because we feel that the benefits of an excellent ATC-GA (Air Traffic Control-General Aviation) relationship, combined with heightened understanding of ATC-GA safety procedures and the pilot experience, would be helpful for all airspaces, not just here in Asheville.
